The lovely and impossibly calming and calm Yvonne is our Positive Birth Preparation guru and Fertile Body Method Practitioner, (as well as being a mummy, university lecturer and currently working on her PhD looking at exercise in pregnancy!) and for those who have yet to have the pleasure of meeting her, she shares a little of what she does and how she works.
For those of you who have had the pleasure, well I need say no more!
“Birth can be unpredictable, and sometimes it doesn’t go the way you plan or expect it to, and believe me, during the birth of my first child, Isabelle, I was no exception – my planned home birth ended in a caesarean (I’ll share my birth stories in a future post!). But the tools I had learnt through hypnobirthing enabled me to handle the experience calmly and with control. In fact, the midwives were so impressed with my cool and collected manner, that they were very quick to compliment me!
Inspired to share the benefits of antenatal education and hypnobirthing with others, I have since gone on to become a fully qualified Antenatal Teacher and licensed Natal Hypnotherapy practitioner, whilst still educating myself through workshops and study days, as well as studying for a PhD in Exercise during Pregnancy.
It is, of course, totally natural to have fears about birth and becoming a parent, especially on expecting your first. No one gives you a manual on how to be a parent, and that can be very daunting. Through my workshops, I aim to help minimise those fears, and build a couple’s confidence by providing them with the tools they need to cope. It can be an overwhelming time for both mum and dad, so it’s important they’re equally involved.
Though the word hypnotherapy carries mystic connotations for a lot of people, it is actually a very natural approach to teaching the brain how to deal with different anxieties, stresses, and pressures with a more positive approach. You can rest assured that there’ll be no wacky stuff going on!
I facilitate the workshops to encourage the development of a support network amongst the couples. I love hearing about each couple’s experience beyond the workshops, too – often I will receive updates via email, or a phone call, which is wonderful and great to hear that what I have shared is of so much value.
The skills I teach are intended to last, not just for birth, but for a lifetime, and come in handy at so many of life’s unpredictable moments. My children are now three and seven, and I still use techniques to deal with those testing moments, such as the ‘3-2-1 Relax’ technique, which you will learn with me, and which I even apply to my husband when he’s forgotten to bring the shopping in!
